HONOR FLIGHT April 1, 2009

Emerald Coast Honor Flight
By NCC Kenny Ruber, USN, Ret.
Recently, I had the pleasure of being one of thirty-five Guardians for the Emerald Coast Honor Flight. Each Guardian was assigned three Veterans to assist throughout the day. My Veterans included: Art VanOstenbridge, age 84, U.S. Army from Pensacola; John O’Connell, age 92, U.S. Army from Fort Walton; and R.D. Lawson, age 84, U.S. Navy from Crestview. In addition to chaperoning three Veterans, I was assigned as the bus coordinator making sure all Veterans made it to the airport on time for their departure and back after the long day ahead. Following is my remembrance of an unforgettable day.
The Pensacola Council Navy League sponsored the bus and hard-working board members were on hand at 0330 to help Veterans board the bus. By 0430, 37 Veterans from Escambia and Santa Rosa counties were underway for a day-long trip of their lives! At 0700, a total of one hundred and thirty three Veterans, and thirty-five Guardians, were en route from Northwest Florida Regional Airport to Washington, D.C. to tour the memorial built for “the greatest generation.”
Once we were airborne, the Veterans had mail call, which consisted of letters written by elementary school children from various Okaloosa County Schools. The children’s letters put smiles one some faces, while others cried the tears that had been locked inside for years.
Upon landing at Regan International airport, the Veterans were greeted by Congressman Jeff Miller and a large group of people with patriotic signs, flags, and balloons. We quickly boarded buses and were on our way to the first memorial, the WWII Memorial. There, the Veterans toured their memorial and attended a wreath-laying ceremony lead by Congressman Jeff Miller. Lunch was served at the WWII memorial as Senator Bob Dole addressed the Veterans. After departing the WWII memorial we made stops at the Korean, Lincoln, Vietnam, and Iwo Jima memorials.
While in Washington D.C., I had a wonderful time watching these American Heroes interacting with each other and listening to all the stories, some sad and others exciting. It was truly an amazing day for me. As we made our way back to Regan International, the Veterans had slowed down quite a bit, as the long day had worn them and by the time a snack was served on the plane, the Veterans were pretty quiet
