THE 12TH ANNUAL POW LUNCHEON
The Pensacola Council of the Navy League and the Pensacola Chapter of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge will jointly sponsor the "Annual Prisoner of War Luncheon" on Tuesday, September 16th , 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Heritage Hall in Seville Quarter.
This is one function that everyone should plan to attend. This year there will be two recipients of the award: WWII veteran COL Velfort J. DeArmond, Jr., USAF (Ret) and Vietnam veteran CAPT Collins H. Haines, USN (Ret). Each of these individuals was subject to indescribable conditions while serving our country. They went above and beyond the call of duty in protecting and preserving our nation. The freedoms that we as citizens of this great country enjoy on a daily basis are because of the heroic aclike the ones that are being recognized at this luncheon. Help us render thanks for their honorable and distinguished service. Mark your calendar.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Bob Anderson
What a ride! After several years of prodding from my good friend the editor of the “Bullhorn,” Butch Wallace, I relented and joined the Navy League of the United States.
That was six years ago. This seventh year as I assume the position of President of the Pensacola Council I am humbled and in awe of those who have gone before. The Pensacola Council dates back to 1946. The list of members of this Council is a who’s who of the local community. We have a mix of retired military, of all ranks and rates, and civilians from every walk of life. All things considered and combined, this is what Navy League is all about. We are here to provide support and assistance to the sea services including the U. S. Navy, U. S. Marine Corps, Merchant Marine and U. S. Coast Guard. In recent years we also have participated in council events from other military services including the U. S. Air Force and U. S. Army. In the current military it is only fitting that our efforts in support go to all in “Harm’s Way.”
The Pensacola Council has made great strides in 2009, thanks in a large part to the Council’s Board of Directors and a special membership drive committee under the direction of Mrs. Peggy Pilcher. Each and every one of the Community Affiliates is extremely important in the success of Navy League in Pensacola and we can thank Pete Moore for his active participation, which resulted in a significant increase in the numbers of Affiliates.
The special events that the Navy League is involved with each year could not take place without the Affiliate sponsorship. See a complete list of Community Affiliates in this issue of the Bullhorn.
We have discussed support from Navy League members to sea services extensively in all of our public presentations and articles. In return, the Pensacola Council is in possession of a letter from the Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Pensacola, Captain William P. Reavey, USN, that grants some privileges to our Council Members. The letter was sent to Past President Bobby Riggs stating that he is extending to Pensacola Council members the opportunity to use the following base facilities: A. C. Reed Golf course; Mustin Beach Officers Club; and Bayou Grande Wet Slips. This privilege, extended to you, the members of Pensacola Chapter of Navy League, is a real bonus. To take advantage of the facilities described above, please have ready a picture ID and your Navy League Membership Card when you enter Naval Air Station Pensacola.
Have a great and prosperous 2010.
